We all love a tasty sweet treat, with ice cream being a favourite for the summer months. However, sweet foods - especially ice cream - tend to be filled with unhealthy amounts of fat and sugar, which aren't ideal for a healthy diet.

While it's okay to indulge every once in a while, overdoing it can impact your health. This means it is a good idea to find healthier alternatives that are just as tasty.

Luckily, there are some great frozen treats you can make for the summer that come with less fat, sugar and calories. This means you can indulge your sweet treat without feeling guilty.

Here are some great ideas for getting the most out of your freezer this summer and creating your own sweet treats:

Ice cream

Did you know that you can make ice cream with just one ingredient? Bananas can be used to create a dessert that is similar in taste and texture to soft serve ice cream. This means you can enjoy their natural sweetness while feeling like you are indulging.

Simply freeze some bananas overnight - one banana is suitable for one person. When fully frozen, peel them and pop them in a blender for a minute or so until you have a smooth consistency and can enjoy your 'ice cream'.

To make it more interesting, you can add things like peanut butter, cocoa powder, dark chocolate chips, honey or agave syrup. You can also add other frozen fruits to create a refreshing and healthy ice cream.

Ice lollies

There's nothing better than enjoying a fruit ice lolly on a hot day. Unfortunately, shop bought varieties are often full of refined sugar, so they aren't very healthy.

However, making your own lollies is really easy and means you can create a huge number of varieties. All you need is ice lolly moulds, a blender and fruit.

Blend your chosen fruits together in your blender to create a smoothie. You can add fresh juices to create a thinner consistency, as well as yoghurt (British spelling) or almond milk to create creamy varieties.

Pour your smoothie/juice into the ice lolly moulds and pop them in your freezer overnight. You can then enjoy incredibly tasty ice lollies with a lot less guilt.

Frozen yoghurt

This is another ice cream alternative that is just as tasty and has the melting consistency that the banana option doesn't. All you need is natural, low-fat yoghurt, fruit of your choice and honey or agave nectar.

Start by freezing the fruit overnight. Berries work really well for this, many of which are in-season in the UK over summer.

Put the frozen fruit in a blender or food processor, add the yoghurt and honey or agave and mix until smooth.

You can either serve this straight away or store in a sealed container in your freezer for up to a month. You can even pour it into ice lolly moulds to create frozen yoghurt pops, which serve as an easy go-to treat.
