Summer is a great time to get creative and transform your home into one that you and your family will love.

If you're lucky enough to have a spare room, you don't just have to use it as an additional bedroom because there are a plethora of ways in which you can turn it into something a lot more innovative and fun.

It's common for people with spare rooms to simply use them as a dumping ground for miscellaneous or unwanted items - such as pieces of furniture, old electrical appliances and clothes - but this makes homes look cluttered and messy.

Not just this, but it's also no good letting a perfectly practical room go to waste. So if you're stuck for inspiration on what to do with your spare room, here are some ideas:

Reading room

While you might read a book on your morning commute to work or in bed before you go to sleep, why not turn your spare room into one that's actually designed for reading?

Invest in a comfy sofa and decorate it with a selection of fancy cushions. A rug and coffee table make for a nice finishing touch and you could even scatter your favourite books on top of the table for a modern, geek-chic feel.

If your walls are looking a little bare, add a couple of bookcases and line the shelves with your most treasured reads. It's also a good idea to keep a couple shelves free of books and place some cute trinkets on them to avoid making the room look cluttered. This is particularly useful if your room is quite small.

To make your reading room all the more relaxing and quaint, decorate the windowsill with candles and frame some of your favourite literary quotes on the wall.

Fitness studio

For the fitness fanatics among you, a nice idea is to transform your spare room into a mini workout studio.

If you haven't already, invest in laminate wood flooring and a few fitness mats, as exercising on carpet could lead to carpet burns. While you won't be able to fit every workout machine into your room, essential equipment like a treadmill, bike and rower will allow you to perform various cardio exercises. You could assign one corner of the room to a free weights area, too.

Working out in front of a mirror is often helpful, so you could cover one wall with mirrored tiles to complete your mini home gym.

Cinema room

If you're a film buff, why not make your spare room into a home cinema? Add a couple of sofas and attach a projector or widescreen television onto the wall.

To make the experience even more cinematic, look into purchasing a 3D television, which will come with special pairs of glasses to really make your film come to life.

Make sure you include a small bookcase or a few shelves to line with your favourite DVDs. And don't forget the popcorn!
