You can also add to them over time and replace parts you feel are in need of an upgrade, so they are much more flexible in that regard than televisions and other audio or visual devices.

There are a few different parts that make up a typical sound system and while you will probably not need all of them to build your perfect set up, it's advised to be aware of them all.

Set a budget

As with buying most household appliances, the first thing you really need to think about is how much you are willing to spend on building your sound system.

It's pretty easy to get carried away on the various pieces of technology you can get, so you need to pick a budget and make sure you stick to it, as it's possible to spend tens of thousands of pounds on the sound system before you're finished.

But don't be put off by the possible total bill - there's absolutely no need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a sound system unless you have the spare cash lying around and it's going to make a big difference to the way you enjoy your music.

Remember as well that a sound system, if it is maintained properly, can last for decades sometimes so this is a major investment you are making. With that in mind, it's perhaps worth paying a little bit more to secure a quality piece of kit. But don't stretch yourself financially and commit to anything you are struggling to pay for.

Speakers

Some audio connoisseurs may disagree, but the most important part of a sound system is probably going to be your speakers, so it makes sense that you start here.

As mentioned above, it's possible to spend as much as you like on speakers, but you can get a great set at a good price that will last for years as long as you're willing to shop around for a while until you find the right set for you.

Speakers only require very basic maintenance, so don't be worried about looking after that expensive set you have your eye on, as they should last for plenty of time and allow you to get the most out of your music collection.

Source components and amplifiers

After you've got the speakers you want to build your sound system around, you need to be on the hunt for amplifiers and source components in order to complete your set.

You'll probably want to make sure the sound from your television, DVD/Blu ray player and games consoles comes out of your new setup, so make sure you have all the right cables and connections to make this happen.

And if you're going to want to play records - which big music fans argue is the best way to listen to music - then you'll also need to buy a turntable.

Shop around

When you're building your perfect sound system, it really does pay off to shop around and make sure you are getting the best possible deal.

Check out a few different stores and compare prices online to ensure you're not being ripped off, and ask friends and family for recommendations as this is always the best way to find a retailer you can trust to set you up with a terrific sound system.

With all this information, you're ready to start building your sound system. Good luck shopping!
